Urban Intellectuals is proud to present our Pre-1492 Black History Flash Cards, designed to combat the miseducation and suppression of Black achievements around the globe. This deck shows our greatness before the interruption of slavery!
For this volume we produced 52 cards that give an insight into the history of Black people in the world before 1492, to give a solid foundation to further the understanding that our history did not start with slavery, that Africa and the global Black population have long been a part of world history and at the forefront of many of the most important developments in human history.
Enjoy learning about the revolutionary contributions of our people from the earliest humans until the myth that Columbus “discovered” the Americas!

Our mini market baskets are used traditionally in West Africa to carry produce to and from markets or farms. Created in in Bolgatanga, Ghana in 12 villages with more than 5,000 women basket weavers, the Alaffia weavers work independently in a creative process. Alaffia places an order and pays 90% of the cost of the basket upfront. Members of Alaffia basket cooperatives receive fair wages and health care for their families in return for indigenous skills and knowledge. The weavers craft the baskets in their own homes, and Alaffia collects the baskets once they are completed. This gives the weaver flexibility to work at a pace that is convenient for her, her farm, family, and social community duties. Because Alaffia collects the baskets at the weavers’ homes, the women do not have to sell their baskets at the open market as is the case for weavers that are not part of the Alaffia Collectives. This exchange empowers West African communities and preserves cultural heritage.
Each basket is completely unique and the leather tag inside is personally signed by the weaver. Made with wild-harvested Savannah grass.

Kenya is inspired by the modern woman that strikes a balance between bright effervescence, yet grounded in the black and white realities of the times, which explains her pairing with Yusuf, "that numbers dude". Kenya is immensely creative and surprises herself when she unearths a new talent. Kenya is a charming go-getter -- never the gold-digger always the purebred goal-getter, she uses all those talents to manifest an abundance of opportunities. Kenya is also a professional reader -- she is not buried in the books, but burying her haters in A-grade shade, her quick mind and equally quick mouth is fully loaded with read, after read, so don't come for her.
Inspiration Notes for Yusuf:
We all know a person that slays grey matter in favor of clear, decisive decisions; those Folks are the Yusufs in our messy lives. Yusuf is the level-headed, clear-thinking, analytical person in the crew. Yusuf may be a numbers guy, possibly works in risk management, a lawyer or an administrator.
According to the gospel of Yusuf -- everything is black and white -- life is best lived drama-free. He loves order, predictability and yes finding meaningful patterns to hack life. Yusuf eats rights, works out and he was probably the first guy in your crew to run down the aisle to be a family man. Brothers and sisters please don't ask Yu to join your gift circle, sou sou, MLM scheme -- he wants no parts of your foolish. However, if you have a tough decision to make, you might want to consult with Yusuf, he is the truth.
The primitive marks of the Yusuf design is an abstract concept of a ledger, constellation and the constitution of a humble man who measures his worth through an accumulation of cherished memories and milestones made with his folk, his tribe. The contrast between the matte black is juxtaposed with a series of white tic marks, circles, irregular squares and deltas (triangles) which represent change.

Our Abebe print is inspired by ankara, a pattern and fabric style common in various parts of Africa. Ankara is seen in celebration wear, everyday wear, accessories, furniture and, more recently, fashion runways across the world. The patterns have different cultural meanings, conveying messages to those who are gifted the fabric or see someone wearing it at an event. I’ve always loved the way I feel when wearing ankara - joyful, beautiful and connected to a greater community. The Malcolm design cleverly organizes multiple bands to form a series of X's. Like many converts, Malcolm Little joined the Nation of Islam abandoned the use of his surname in exchange for a single letter X. The X represents lost identity, heritage and history associated with enslavement in the Americas, yet seemingly it also means know thyself. Malcolm epitomizes reinvention through self-discovery, self-education and mentorship and the endless possibilities of what you can become when you know thyself. Each of the bands in the Malcolm design honors the segments of our life and the big picture connections.
The Malcolm design features a color palette inspired by the African Savanna -- gold, black, pistachio, sandstone, khaki and pumpkin orange. Malcolm is paired with the Betty design, which features the same color palette.

Our Bògò collection was inspired by bògòlanfini (meaning "mud cloth" in the Bambara language), a handmade Malian cotton fabric traditionally dyed with fermented mud. We've chosen to keep the Bògò print in earthy tones, so we've called it "bògò" meaning "earth" or "mud" in Bambara.
